wilber4.jpgAs you probably saw in this week’s Lakeville Journal and in other media outlets as well, State Rep. George Wilber (at right), a Democrat who represents eastern portions of the Northwest Corner, resigned on Monday amid health problems and revelations that he paid $100,000 three years ago to a woman who claimed he had molested her repeatedly when she was a girl.

Since Wilber resigned so abruptly and such a short time before the Nov. 4 election, it looks like his Republican opponent, John Rigby, will run unopposed for the seat. Indeed there may not even be time to remove Wilber’s name from the ballots. They may have to use — and I’m not making this up — Wite-Out to block Wilber’s name.

But a legal battle is being waged and as I write this there is the possibility that Lakeville attorney Bill Riiska (a Democrat who lives in Norfolk in Wilber’s district) could be a write-in candidate. Riiska submitted a timely application to the Secretary of the State’s office for his write-in candidacy.

But, contrary to state statutes, Riiska faxed the application in rather than deliver it by hand or by mail. Like any good lawyer, Riiska is going to court in an effort to maintain the viability of his candidacy so that voters will have a choice come Nov. 4. Even though Riiska faces an uphill battle, I hope he succeeds. It would be a shame if Rigby’s name was the only option for residents of the 63rd district.

There are accusations flying that the Democratic controlled state legislature swept this matter under the rug and did not give sufficient credence to the alleged victim — presumably in an effort to protect one of their own.

I’ve met Wilber on several occasions and have interviewed him three or four times. I have always admired his candor and principles. So I guess I would be shocked if the allegations were true. One thing did jump out at me:
