Yes He Can!
May 22, 2008 on 4:41 pm | In Education, Main, Race for Prez |Update to the post below: The guy who will lose in the fall to the old warmonger will speak at the commencement exercises at my graduate school alma mater. That’s right, Obama will be in Connecticut Sunday to stand in for the ailing Ted Kennedy and sing to the teeming liberal masses at Wesleyan University.
When I got my degree there in 1990, I got to see Bishop Desmond Tutu speak. Like Obama, the bishop was uplifting, but he had that piercing and high-pitched quality to his voice. Fortunately he did not speak in bromides of the sort favored by Obama. Frankly, I think we got a better deal than the class of 2008. Yes We Did!

Terry, having had lunch with (then) Bishop Tutu twice — and having him remember my name and my employer for two years between meetings — I have to say that there are not too many people around today who can walk in his shoes (high pitched voice or not).
I’d concur that you were very fortunate indeed to hear Tutu. I’d like to think that in eighteen years people will feel the same way when they compare whomever they recruit to speak to the class of 2036(?) with the speaker of 2008.
Obama (vice Kennedy) has big shoes to fill.
