The earlier years of the Times might interest a few who comment on this blog, because in the earlier years, the Times was a faily partisan REPUBLICAN paper. They took great pleasure in blasting Sen. William H. Barnum (from Lime Rock), who happened to be a Democrat, for instance.

There is material in the years that will now be free that will be upsetting to many in Lakeville and Salisbury today -- particularly those who subscribe to some of the conventional views of local history.

Have fun!!

"Its". Jeez, it was a long day. Though it started with a speech by General Honore of Katrina ("Let's not get stuck on stupid") fame. He gives good speech.

Dan, just what the doctor ordered...

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/10

End of Times Select + Adblock = Your Dream Come True.

(I'll take a five buck consulting fee for that!)

Terry2... Hinckley Yachts, SW Harbor, Maine. I've had two. Irony of the week. Bain Capital Management (Romney's company) structured the buy out deal on Hinckley several years ago and the new owners are all Romney buddies (as is America's Cup wannabe defender Koch). Unfortunately, it isn't the quiet little quality boat yard it used to be, but now builds boats for social climbers and preening nouveau riche. We Mainers were shocked when they put out with Martha Stewart. At thousand former Hinckley owners rolled in their graves.

Re Times Select... Terry, word is that Murdoch is going to open the WSJ to all, and do what he has done in London and Sydney... ie, cut advertising rates by 50%. That should pretty much sink the Times. It's stock is worth 30% of what it was five years ago. My prediction that it would be owned by Yagooglsoft by 2010 is looking better and better each day.

Thanks a lot, Terry. Ya start thinking of names for Kerry's boat and the game just doesn't let you go. I may not get to sleep tonight. Speaking of names. It's a Hinkley power boat?

Talk about bad associations re a guy who ran for president. You see him out there on that swift boat and can't help but think about the guy who shot Reagan.

And damn! I've been a Times Select reader for a few years now. Now every Tom, Dick and Harry has access to what was my private club. It's getting harder to be an elitist these days.

James,

Maybe it’s a period of time the Times would rather forget?

Dan,

The model of giving away content for nothing isn’t new. Radio and over-the-air TV have been doing it for generations.

My understanding is that in most cases the news stand and subscription prices of newspapers do little more than cover distribution costs. And on the web those costs are comparatively minimal. I guess it depends on each paper’s business model.

I have heard the NYT columnists (including those you cite) were the ones who hated Times Select the most. The reason? No one linked to them anymore and, as Jeff Jarvis has aptly pointed out, links are vitally important for growth on the web.

As a New York Time stockholder, I don't see why the newspaper should all be given away for nothing. We online readers "pay" by having to wade through awful ads. I would pay $5 a week just to read Maureen Dowd, Paul Krugman, Tom Friedman and Bob Herbert. in an ad free environment. Obviously, I am out of sync with the times.

The way I understand it is that some of the content in the intervening 65 years will be free while other content will not be.

The 65 year hole could have something to do with staffing during the time period. I know 1986 saw a new executive editor (Max Frankel).

Anyone else have any insight?
