Blogging Break

Blogging here will be slow for the next couple of days. I am headed to Saratoga Springs, N.Y., for the annual NYPA convention. Back Sunday. Meanwhile, let the debates continue.

  1. Terry,
How could you leave town and miss The Falls Village Children’s Theater Company production of “Cinderella” this weekend? I urge all your faithful readers to witness the magic at HRVHS on Friday at 7, Saturday at 7 and Sunday at 2. Admission is FREE (but donations are most welcome!)

  3. Thanks Dan,
Good luck (or break a leg) to all the cast and crew. For more info, go here:

    Fred,
No racing, although I must admit it is the only form of gambling I ever indulge in. Only business this weekend.
    Cheers, TC

  4. If you didn’t see Cinderella last night - schedule it in for tonight (Sat) or Sunday. It is truly a magical show - the kids are fantastic. The music is outstanding. Great show for all to see.

  5. Don’t miss this show - its fabulous! The kids are fantastic, the music is absolutely outstanding. I saw it lastnight with my grandson and it was amazing. I’m sure there will be an excellent review in the paper next week - won’t there Terry?

  6. I certainly wish the FVCT the best of luck (or the breaking of many legs …). I did see a portion of a rehearsal and it looked very promising indeed.

Leo, We do not review amateur productions for one very simple reason. It’s difficult to be candid about a production with amateur actors because there are many young feelings to be hurt if there is criticism involved. And a review that’s not honest isn’t worth the paper it’s written on.

Professionals, on the other hand, are “big boys” and can take it. Well, usually they can …

  7. Why do people expect a review of any production that has only a one-weekend run?
The purpose of a review is to let people know if it is worth seeing.
And as Terry said, no one really wants an honest review of an amateur production. A photo or two is the way to go to meet the interest of the majority of readers.

  8. Was there not a review of A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum in the Lakeville Journal last week? Was that not a one weekend performance?

  9. Tery…

    You review my amature show!!!

  10. Last week’s “Forum” story was just that - a news story about how theater has been revived at Housy.
It seemed to me it had a “review” flavor to it in order to illustrate how students have risen to the challenge.

  11. And how theatre has come to the children of FV is not news worthy? The show was magnificent and truly deserved a follow-up in the paper. Why not?

    Comment by Totally perplexed — April 2, 2007 #

  12. 1 - FVCT has gotten lots of press - the world does not revolve around it for everyone - there are other things we’d like to read about.
2 - Who said there won’t be a follow up? Just don’t mistakenly call it a review. (Is “magnificant” an unbiased description?)

  13. Did you see it?
Can’t answer the issue on the coverage on the “FVCT” - I was referring to a magical show filled with children of all ages - not sure what you are referring to at all. I thought we were discussing a play ????

  14. The issue was news coverage, Totally.
Emotional ranting of this sort is exactly why newspapers cringe at news coverage of plays. No matter what is written, or not, we’ll end up reading letters of criticism to the editor.

  15. I didn’t realize before that you were one of the reporters from the paper. Sorry - I can see how it could be a problem if the kids were reviewed badly. I’m sure if your own children were in it you would feel badly had the piece been negative. I just thought a follow-up would be nice as the kids did such a great job. And partly just expected it after seeing the one on the Housy play, the play in North Canaan, Sharon school and in Cornwall last year. No emotional ranting on my end - I was just making an un-emotional point on a simple blog.

  16. Hey, watch it, Totally Perplexed! This is no SIMPLE blog. It is VERY sophisticated. :)

  17. Sorry - I was referring more to the comment than your obviously sophisticated blog - see you at the meeting tonight.
