Mew, Mew All The Way

Evidently Marshall Miles did not like my last post mentioning the inanity of the Christmas music we are beseiged with on popular radio.

“You have gone too far,” Miles said this morning on News and Views, his drive-time show on WHDD (1020-AM). “You have besmirched the name of the barking dogs.” It was a reference to my annoyance at the annual ritual of playing one of the worst Christmas songs ever to hit the air.

What did Miles do? He proceeded to play one that’s even worse. Somewhere in the bowels of his hard drive, Miles found a version of Jingle Bells performed not by barking dogs but by mewing cats.

Now you’ve gone too far, Marshall. Putting jolly canines on the air is one thing, but (with the possible exception of Blackie) cats are just pure evil. What’s next? A chorus of cobras hissing “It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year?”

You have ruined my Christmas. Now I will seek redress in the courts.

NP Air

Speaking of my favorite radio stations, I hear Air America and NPR are merging. Well, at least they have a similar business model: neither can stay afloat without a subsidy from like-minded benefactors.

  3. So, here’s something you may not know about me — many, many years ago I used to listen to Howard Stern on my drive home from work, and one time an entire show was devoted to everyone on the air bleating like a lamb. I don’t think I’ve ever laughed as hard in my life before or since.

I friend of my parents’ also once produced a little 45 (when I was a kid) of various animals doing the William Tell Overture (the sounds were manufactured, manipulated, or both). We used to love listening to it. As I remember, it said “Arturo Mouscanini conducting” or something like that.

  4. For the record, cats are not evil. They are just smarter than most people.

As for your apparent hatred of animals making music, you must not be a fan of Pink Floyd’s song “Several Species of Small Furry Animals Gathered Together in a Cave and Grooving with a Pict”. It can be found on the “Ummagumma” album, if you’re interested.

  5. Now that Air America is part of National Pretentious Radio, will NPR remain the paragon of centrist, non-partisan reporting that it has been for all these years? I’m concerned.

  6. Amy,

I think cats create the illusion that they are smart b’c they are so mysterious. Any animal that enigmatic must be intelligent, right?

And for the record, I would rather listen to the barking dogs singing Jingle Bells than any Pink Floyd song.

PF reminds me of high school when I was abysmally irresponsible and stupid as … a cat.

  7. So, Fred, it may be time to sign up for Sirius radio to hear Howard again. He’s been promoting it heavily on late-night talk shows recently (just in time for holiday shopping.)

  8. That’s all right, I can hear America bleating louder every day….oh, sorry, wrong posting! ;-)
