Instead of looking at the partisan reactions (on both sides) to Woodward’s latest, or speculating on his intentions, I think we should consider the content of the tome. The revelations about Kissinger, Rumsfeld, Andy Card, Colin Powell and esp Condi Rice are a disturbing window into Bush’s White House. Bush’s leadership and ideological motivations were well covered in Woodward’s previous book, and should not be minimized. This time, the lessons of Vietnam, which were so ridiculed when this war began, are blatant. Every prediction the WH made going into this war has been wrong. How can anyone support such a failed policy?

Thanks for your comment. I agree. I guess my point here (however inelegantly expressed) was that how people react to books like this (or polls, for that matter) says as much about us as it does about the subjects of the books. And in this case, perhaps the partisan reaction also says something about Woodward the journalist (see my two post scripts).
That having been said, I have not read State of Denial, but have only seen the press accounts. Count me as among those for whom the book confirms what I already believe, which is:
I initially supported the war in Iraq against my better instincts. It didn’t seem to make a whole lot of sense to me until Colin Powell went before the U.N. and painted a pretty grim picture. Since I respected Powell, I was taken in. But once the WMDs were not found in any significant numbers, we lost the moral justification for the war.
I now think Bush wanted to go into Iraq from the get-go and that he and the other neo-cons seized on the WMD issue because they thought it was something the American people would readily understand. Then they cherry-picked the intelligence and the rest is history. On the war, they were the gang that couldn’t shoot straight, especially Rummy, whom apparently everyone but Bush wanted to fire.
Only a couple of weeks ago, VP Cheney said on Meet The Press that if he had to do it all over again (and knowing what he knows now), he would do exactly the same thing. Astonishing. This adminstration’s legacy will be judged by Iraq, which we will probably pull out of in much the same way we did Vietnam, leaving chaos and destruction in our wake. What an embarassment!

That’s a very good question. My understanding is her position is similar to Lieberman’s — voted for the resolution authorizing the war and continues to defend it, while criticizing aspects of the war’s execution.
If you go on her campaign website and view her key issues page, Iraq is nowhere to be found (surprise!). It’s the crazy aunt in the attic no one really wants to talk about — the GOP for obvious reasons and the Dems because they don’t really know what to do about Iraq now that we’re there.
To his credit, Murphy does have an issues page that addresses the matter. He refers to Johnson as “an enabler” of an administration that led us to war under false pretenses. Johnson will be either coming to The Journal soon for an interview or will be available by conference call. You can be sure I will ask her about if if I am present during those interviews.

If you’re just “trying to have some fun” pick some topics that don’t involve war and sexual abuse. Putting the title “politics and pizza” next to a picture of Foley trivialize what Foley did to a degree I find obscene.
I must admit I can barely believe some of what you write. For example: “WMDs were not found in any significant numbers.” No WMDs were found in any number, significant or otherwise! And “we lost the moral justification for the war.” Never mind what we’ve learned since, in light of what was know before the war began, there never has been any moral justification for this war.
As Jonathan Schell so aptly put it, with this war we have become the fools of history, the fools of force. It really is tragic that so few people sought information beyond the MSM (especially the WSJ) before this war began.
Although those correctly predicting the mess we are now in were not welcome to appear on FOX or ABC, etc. they were out there and a little digging would have unearthed their cautionary tale. We were, and still are, a nation of sheep.

I assume you are similarly offended any time anyone (e.g. John Stewart, Maureen Dowd) makes a crack about the war or about the Republicans’ woes in the wake of Foleygate.
I also assume you were just as outraged when Dem Rep. Gerry Studds actually had sex with a teenage page, was unrepentant about it and was subsequently re-elected five or six times by the people of his Bay State district.
If you are really as offended by what you read here as you say you are, then I suggest you avoid this “obscene” blog — if for no other reason than to preserve your own mental health.
