35K And Barely A Whimper
September 21, 2006 on 1:59 pm | In Main, National |Perhaps some of my readers could explain this to me. A friend just alerted me to the fact that 35,000 people in New York protested the Tuesday speech of Iranian President Ahmadinejad at the U.N. There has been almost no coverage of the demonstration, which featured speakers such as Elie Wiesel, U.N. Ambassador John Bolton, Gov. George Pataki and Harvard Prof. Alan Dershowitz.
35,000 people and the only coverage in the MSM I have been able to find is in the conservative newspaper the New York Sun. Several Jewish publications ran articles and it has turned up in blog searches. But I think it’s safe to say that if protesters had turned out in such numbers to register their disapproval of President Bush’s speech, we would have heard about it big time.
The Sun article is here. And there are other accounts and discussions here, here and here. Maybe the MSM will be shamed into reporting this eventually. My friend is fit to be tied over this. Is he overreacting?

We should all be fit to be tied! The Mainstream media offers us only their version of what they think we want as news.
We at CATV 6 run I.N.N. news live at 6:30 every night Monday thru Friday, and we run Democracy Now every Monday thru Fridaya t 12 noon, and both shows had coverage of what you are talking about. I do not always agree with what I see on I.N.N or Democracy Now here at CATV 6, but I can tell you between Democracy Now at 12 noon and I.N.N at 6:30 PM, you get a whole new perspective on the news!!!!!

We make a mistake when we think of the media (MSM in your terminology) as a monolithic entity. Sure, there’s a herd mentality, and the big boys tend to cover the same things and to omit to cover certain things, but, especially in terrms of TV news, there are also space limitations that drive what is and is not to be covered. No doubt, though, that this is a story that national papers should have picked up, and that deserved to be picked up. We have collectively demonstrated the strength of the U.S. Constitution and Bill of Rights by permitting Iran’s CEO and Venezuela’s to shout fire in our theater. Remember: what is going on, demonstrations or none, rhetoric or none, warmongering or none, is not the fault of the media.

I think your friend is overreacting.
This is what the JTA, a Zionist site, said:
“Jewish groups and others came out en masse Wednesday to protest against Ahmadinejad in a rally organized by the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations, Jewish Community Relations Council of New York, United Jewish Communities and UJA-Federation of New York. Some 35,000 people rallied across from the United Nations to protest Ahmadinejad’s presence at the world body.”
First of all, regarding “facts,” no group rallied “across from the United Nations.” They weren’t allowed to. They were confined to “free speech zones” five blocks away.
Second, the Neterei Karta rabbis also turned up and they rallied in SUPPORT of Amadinejad. (They also attended an event for Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez at Cooper Union Wednesday night where Harry Belefonte introduced the companero from South America.)
JTA didn’t mention the Neterei Karta rally, but your blog posting prompted me to post a photo and cutline on http://www.thecornerreport.com where I do mention it.
So, why the outrage at the lack of press coverage of the Zionists, but not at the lack of press coverage of the anti-Zionists?
Third, none of the “free speech zones” looked like they could hold 35,000 people. I think that would be considered a “security risk.”
Fourth, there was so many events at the UN and during the evenings that protest groups — and there were lots and lots of tehm rallying for and against each issue — were not exactly a top priority in terms of newsworthiness.

Tom:
I never placed blame on the media for whats going on…just blame for over 500 channels of the same crap…except a handful that dare to be different.
All these channels and frequencies on radio are supposed to provide “diverse programming”.
After airing some rather interesting, and very diverse programming on CATV 6, and seeing the reaction, both positive and negitive, I feel tht more media needs to broaden their horizons to shed light on diferent viewpoints WITHOUT the constant analisys of network reporters or so called expeerts the networks hire…just let the story speak for itself…
And once again…its not just Zionists, Anti-Sionists….press coverage is more and more done for medias “BIG STORY” bang, not story content.
