LRP Fireworks Washed Out This Year

After two days of agony and frustration, the Salisbury Rotary Club has canceled its popular 4th of July fireworks display, spokesman John Neufeld said in an email this morning.

The event was originally scheduled for Sunday evening but was postponed to last night after forecasts called for severe weather. As it happened, no thunderstorms passed through the area Sunday night. Then the Rotary Club, which has sponsored the fireworks display for years, went with last night, its scheduled rain date.

The forecast looked decidedly better for yesterday, but around noon another severe thunderstorm watch was announced for most of eastern New York and western New England. But this time the storms came. They began rumbling through the area around 6 p.m., forcing organizers to decide whether they would be over in time for the fireworks display slated for around 9:30 p.m.

Weekend Traffic Makes Millerton A Mecca

mton.traffic.jpgMILLERTON — Have you tried to drive into or through this quaint Victorian village on a weekend lately? If it weren’t for the abundance of useful businesses and friendly people, I’d say avoid it altogether.

Located at the intersection of two major state highways, Millerton has always had traffic problems, as I discovered when I worked smack in the middle of downtown from 1996 to 2001. Then I continued to view the village’s traffic woes as I commuted for the next four years from Lakeville through Millerton to Amenia. How bad have things gotten in recent years? If I need(ed) to travel to Amenia on a weekend, I went through Sharon and still do. If I need to go to Millerton itself on a weekend, I grin and bear it.
