Why the Roar?
July 20, 2006 on 8:20 pm | In Main, Scenic Photos |
The Great Falls of the Housatonic River are seen this afternoon from the Salisbury side. The falls were as active as I have seen them in some time. I had a chat at the top of the overlook with Peter Gilbert and his son Caleb, but the sound of the rushing water was so loud I could barely hear the conversation.
Normally on a day like this there are swimmers dipping into the swirling pools at the bottom. But not today. It would have been far too dangerous. It has been hot and dry for the last several days with little measurable rainfall. Any idea why the falls are still acting like they’re the victim of a recent deluge?

Sure, I know why the Falls are roaring here despite a lack of rain-HERE. It rained very heavily up Northward into Pittsfield where the river starts, or passes through. That water has to go somewhere; down the river of course! right to the Great Falls!. Cheers.

Take 2: However, as I look at your picture of the Falls, if that is a current picture, it is no where near the velocity/volume that can/will occur in more stormy times!

It could be that the powerhouse is not generating any electricity and is letting the river go over the falls. While there is a bypass channel at the powerhouse, it may not be big enough to handle the entire flow of the river right now.

Maybe Massachussets in planning an invasion and are softening up targets in Connecticut. After all, they do have a famous military strategist representing them in the Senate. He, of all people, should know how effective flooding was for the Dutch against the Spanish in the 17th century.

The canal is drained for a couple more weeks for repairs, thus, water that used to run through the canal is now flowing over the dam. Also, the boards that normally are on top of the dam have torn off due to high water, tree debris, etc., resulting in more water able to flow over the dam.
Besides the repairs, with the new ‘Run of the River’ regs, water is flowing out of a upper spillway, down the Falls almost all the time now.
Aren’t the Falls beautiful!

Yes, check out Judy Jacob’s comment. If you take a walk up the canal road, you will see that the canal is dry. None of it is flowing through the canal which it usually does, even with the new regs (otherwise there would be NO electricity generated). For the time being, it is all going over the dam and the Great Falls.
