There’s Danger In These Hills

Is it just me, or is Lakeville home to one of the most confusing and dangerous traffic intersections this side of Poughkeepsie? I refer, of course, to the confluence of Route 41 and Wells Hill Road.

Coming down a long hill and breezing past a busy church, Wells Hill Road ends when it hits Route 41 (otherwise known as Sharon Road) to form a V-shaped intersection. Wells Hill traffic must stop and so must northbound traffic on Route 41. But southbound traffic on 41 is under no such obligation, which is fine so long as cars coming the other way pay attention to and obey the red stop sign and the rectangular sign underneath it that reads, “Oncoming Traffic Does Not Stop.”

Trending Toward Cheffrey’s?

A terrific new eatery opened over Memorial Day weekend on Route 44 in between Lakeville and Salisbury. That in itself isn’t big news, but I hope it signals a welcome trend toward businesses that keep local residents from fleeing to other towns for their needs.

Standing around watching my son’s baseball game a couple of weeks ago and gabbing with some of the other parents, I got into a revealing conversation about the business community in the town of Salisbury.
